One of my food obsessions is the arepa, the griddled Venezuelan corn cake of the gods. I tracked down Rinconcito Salvadoreno because it had pupusas on the menu, a worthy alternative to the arepa, and also yucca fries, somewhat of a rarity in these Pacific Northwest environs.
The gentleman running the whole front of house show is equal parts charming and pushy--trying to upsell you a bit, but all while keeping the mood light. He is definitely part of woodwork at this place.
I tried an order of the bean and cheese pupusas and split the yucca fries with a friend. The bean and cheese filling is blended into the actual pupusa, as opposed to being sandwiched, arepa-style, between 2 halves of a corn cake. They were a bit soft, and for my taste, not quite as good as those that El Caracol in town offers. The yucca fries, however, were fantastic--golden, crispy, delightful (if a bit skimpy on the portion size).
Because this storefront is on Commercial Drive, the prices are calibrated to match the gentrifying atmosphere. A very modest plate of yucca fries is going to set you back about $7, which is a bit steep in my book for this kind of fare. I might pop in again when the yucca urge takes hold, and to try out some of the other menu options. -

Poor service
Waited an hour while several tables who came after us were served on an otherwise quiet evening -

Came in on Italian day on The Drive where they offered a special menu. I was happy to see pupusas and huaraches was on the menu because those were what I wanted to try most.
I have never had pupusas before but they were quite tasty. It's moist and the fillings were good on its own but tasted better with the side of hot sauce provided. Also very generous with the side of pickled veggies.
The food deserved the stars in the review, definitely not for their service & attitude and that is such a shame.
We were served by an elderly gentleman. After we placed our order, his first comment was "that's not a lot of food, it's not enough". Excuse me, but no establishment should EVER say those words out loud to customers.
There wasn't anyone waiting for tables. There was no rush for us to eat as quickly as possible and leave. I didn't appreciate that at all and for this reason, I will not be returning to dine in.
I am glad I didn't order more huaraches because it wasn't the best I have had but I did order another pupusa. -

I'm a fan because I understand. For those of you out there seeking an authentic, entertaining experience of Latin American flavours I truly recommend dropping by this restaurant.
This Resto offers a reasonable variety of Salvadorian dishes that are made in a good amount of time, generally healthy and taste great. The 5 of us were all happy with our reasonably priced, meals from appetizers to desserts.
I recommend having the signature Papusa(s) which were so, so good! Also, the sweet plantain for dessert which is a well appreciated dish in a lot of warm climate countries.
This restaurant isn't without its shortcomings: service can be quite slow and you may feel "ignore" if you come in with a typical North American mentality. Once the staff get to your table you will quickly realize their integrity and service to your needs. I would definitely come here again for the Latin music, "mom-n-pop" ambiance and authentic meals. -

I came for the pupusas, it was okay! Curtido was lacking flavour and salsa was but to shabby. Service was quite slow as it took over 10 minutes for my order to be taken.
